Main Duties and Responsibilities
This position is a Scientist level role that supports formulation development activities of novel protein-based molecules (fusion proteins/bispecifics/antibody drug conjugates/peptides) and monoclonal antibody molecules in early-stage (research to late phase 2) clinical development. Formulation development activities include stability testing and characterization of routes of degradation of proteins in liquid and lyophilized formulations under accelerated temperature, refrigerated storage conditions and under agitation and freeze-thaw stresses in a variety of containers. Analytical methods that are used routinely include HPLC (reversed-phase HPLC, size-exclusion chromatography, ion-exchange chromatography), UV-visible spectroscopy, HIAC and MicroFlow Imaging sub-visible particle counting. Biophysical instrumentation (differential scanning calorimetry, titration calorimetry, fluorescence, circular dichroism) will occasionally be used for protein structural characterization. Activities to support Drug Product manufacturing will be performed, including tech transfer and on-site visits to CMOs (contract manufacturing organizations).
Candidate will work under general supervision of a manager and will supervise other scientists and associates. The candidate will Independently plan, design, and execute formulation development projects, typically more than one project at a time. Candidate will make detailed observations, analyze data, and interpret results and develop research findings and make recommendations, and demonstrate scientific rigor in assessing their own data and that of others. Candidate will maintain a high level of expertise through review of current scientific literature, submissions to scientific journals, and attendance and participation at conferences focused on the research and development efforts of the company. Candidate will also present data and results at group and department meetings and contribute to the preparation of scientific manuscripts and patent applications. The individual should be familiar with and be able to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for experimental operation and data recording.
Responsibilities include participation and leadership of one or more project teams and research initiatives that are related to formulation science of proteins and novel molecules in the MedImmune pipeline.
Scientist I: PhD, MS or BS in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Bioengineering or a related field with 0-3 years (PhD) or 8-10 years (MS) or 10-13 years (BS) experience in the pharmaceutical industry as appropriate (biotechnology area preferred).
Scientist II: PhD, MS or BS in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Bioengineering or a related field with 3-7 years (PhD) or 10-13 years (MS) or 13-15 years (BS) experience in the pharmaceutical industry as appropriate (biotechnology area preferred).
- Candidate must be able to independently plan design and execute experiments and apply effectively chemistry, biochemistry and pharmaceutical knowledge and principles to the design and execution of laboratory experiments.
- Candidate will be expected to contribute to and provide solutions to technical problems and think creatively. Experience with protein/peptide formulation and characterization, lyophilization, SEC, UV-vis spectroscopy and HPLC are required.
- Additional experience with the above biophysical techniques is a plus but not required.
- This is also a laboratory-based position and the candidate must be familiar with laboratory operations (weighing chemicals, balance operation, pH measurement, buffer preparation, lab safety) while adhering to established procedures.
- Candidate must have strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced dynamic environment.
