Main Duties and Responsibilities
The Automation Engineer is responsible for application development, support of existing systems, lab instrument data acquisition and software integration for in-house developed custom automated modules in BioPharmaceutical Development (BPD) Informatics Group, located in MedImmune headquarters in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
Three core areas of responsibility for this position are:
1) Application Development
The Automation Engineer works with the Process Engineers/Project Managers within BPD Informatics in delivering custom applications. The systems are deployed to multiple sites and groups across the globe. These applications handle complex scientific operations, inventory systems or transactional tools. A
2) Support of Existing System
The current data management system utilizes corporate SQL Server database as a back-end and a custom-programmed .NET (or Excel / VBA) user interfaces as the front-end. Collectively, this system is referred to as 'The Data Console'. The Automation Engineer keeps The Data Console and its modules operating with minimal downtime as a critical duty to support the efficient operation of the scientific activities taking place in the BPD Laboratories. The Automation Engineer provides application debugging (requires in-depth knowledge of .NET framework 3.5 as well as Visual Basic), database administration, user support through issue submission system and management of system through network upgrades in collaboration with enterprise IS.
3) Software Integration
When third party software or systems are installed in BioPharmaceutical Development Department, the Automation Engineer provides guidance during the design phase to ensure that the software is configured such that compatibility with existing systems is ensured. Maximizing synergy between new systems and existing systems is a key focus in this area.
• Expertise in application development is a core requirement for this position. In-depth knowledge of .NET (VB.NET and ASP.NET), SQL or any other equivalent languages.
• Expertise in Windows and Web Development
• Thorough understanding of database architecture, creating normalized databases and database administration.
• Creativity in developing automated solutions for the requirements that are generated by Process Engineers.
• Ability to communicate system related information to stakeholders who are familiar well versed in the application interfaces and work flows, without a computer science background.
• Problem solving skills through research, brainstorming or group discussion.
Highly preferred for this position:
• Experience with application development for mobile devices using X-code is a plus.
• Experience developing applications with responsive design.
• Exposure to biopharmaceutical R&D systems and data structures.
Bachelor’s/Master’s degree required in Computer Science, Information Systems or similar field.
1 - 3 years’ experience with MS
3 - 5 years with BS
