Job Description

Primary Purpose of the Role:

The GlobalXpress (GX) Systems Engineer will provide a key support role in managing the GX network infrastructure and Service Enablement Platform (SEP) infrastructure by providing a range of engineering support functions for satellite ground station equipment, core routing and switching equipment and remote satellite terminals.

Job Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Configuration of Inmarsat’s iDirect based GX network to support expansion and operation of the GX service
  • End to end configuration of virtual networks in the GX core network in support of customer on-boarding
  • Low Level analysis and resolution of GX remote satellite terminal issues using a combination of iDirect NMS, core module and PP CLI commands
  • End to End Performance optimization of IP applications over the satellite network
  • Network Monitoring of a State-of-the-Art Satellite Hub-spoke Architecture.
  • Apply and adapt a Script-Based Test Methodology for system upgrade verification
  • Troubleshooting and fault resolution across a range of networking equipment including Cisco routers and switches using both IOS and NX OS as well as Linux based devices
  • Supporting value added resellers and customer support teams to resolve problems ranging from remote terminal issues to service plans and provisioning errors
  • Supporting customer issues with the remote CPE known as the network services device (NSD)
  • Supervising the existing change the control process for the operational GX/SEP network
  • Managing the problem resolution cycle with vendors from initial reporting of bugs/issues through solution design, testing and deployment of patches and release to the live network
  • Support deployment and acceptance testing of new ground stations and new satellite services. In particular supporting the acceptance of iDirect network management systems and protocol processors
  • Provide out of hours support to the NOC as part of the on-call operations engineering team

Essential Knowledge and Skills

  • Eng, BSc or equivalent in Electronic Engineering or suitable technical discipline
  • Minimum of Cisco CCNP R&S, DC or ISP
  • Advanced level of Hands on experience with iDirect Velocity Core Modules, JRC, Cobham and Paradigm GX satellite terminals
  • Advanced level of Hands on experience with iDirect Satellite Hub system 15100 series.
  • In depth Configuration and debugging experience with iDirect Pulse NMS, Protocol Processors, and line cards including BMI, upgrades, recovery technique and backups.
  • Self-motivated, willing to take responsibility and work with minimum supervision
  • A practical, hands-on approach to problem solving with the ability to work effectively under pressure
  • Practical experience of writing automated tests with a UseMango framework
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to present ideas and improvements in an effective and persuasive manner
  • Ability to learn new skills and resolve problems using appropriate documentation and on-line resources widely available
  • Positive attitude to collaborating and solving problems involving multiple groups and technologies and ability to steer and facilitate a cohesive resolution to the benefit Inmarsat.
  • Detailed knowledge of at least 4 of the following:
    • Satellite Communication Engineering
    • IP network routing and switching, in particular detailed knowledge of BGP, NAT and DNS
    • Radio Resource Management techniques
    • Network Security
    • Virtualization, KVM and VmWare / Cisco UCS E-Series Server Module
    • Linux System Administration and scripting

Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of any of the following would be helpful

    • Spectrum Analyser
    • IOS EEM and TCL scripting
    • MPLS
    • DIAMETER, 3GPP Gx and Gy interface
    • Metaswitch Voice experience
    • Multicast, PIM, IGMPv2/v3 , Cisco VDS-IS
